A work experience high school student shares a fresh perspective on the expertise, people, and purpose behind @Risk Underwriting.
“My experience at @Risk, an underwriting agency, gave me a behind-the-scenes insight into the insurance sector. The @Risk team is a specialised, compact environment which allowed me to be included in real conversations, broker discussions, and the technical process. This opportunity gave me an understanding of how underwriting and broking work together to help businesses manage and protect themselves against different risks.
At @Risk, I saw how underwriters evaluate businesses, calculate premiums, and negotiate with brokers. Joseph, an Underwriter, showed me his emails conversing back and forth with brokers and explained how he analysed each business’s policies and needs.
I then moved on to Holly and Ayla, who specialise in Liability and Food Recall. They showed me some popular cases and different kinds of insurance policies, such as Kidnap and Ransom and Crisis Recall. We looked at Product Recall claims and Business Interruption. I learned about malicious product tampering and discussed previous cases such as the Tylenol case, which changed the way businesses package medicine and prevent tampering.
Ayla, an Underwriter, also went through how she conducts a risk assessment, evaluating policy applicants and determining when to accept risk and how to calculate appropriate premiums. Factors like claim history, operational safety protocols, and industry risk profiles are all evaluated extensively.
I found their environment to be competitive and fast-paced as they negotiated with brokers, and I appreciated how closely they worked together.
Overall, I really enjoyed my time at @Risk. I learned lots of valuable advice from everyone on the team, not just about insurance but generally in the corporate environment. The importance of communication, collaboration, building connections, and relationships are all important in shaping success in a professional setting.
Coming from a clueless perspective regarding what I would like to do in my career, I would genuinely consider working in this industry.”
